What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone, a chemical messenger – it is the sex hormone that is responsible for making males male, although women also have the hormone in small amounts.

The brains hypothalamus instructs the pituitary glands on how much testosterone to produce and pituitary glands pass the message to testes that’s why they call it “chemical messengers”.

Testosterone plays an important role in men’s life. Testosterone controls the libido in the body which affects sex drive.

Testosterone increases sperm production and red blood cell production. It maintains the male skeleton by improving the bone density in men as well as strengthening the muscles.

Testosterone naturally peaks during adolescence and childhood but as men get older, testosterone level declines. The gradually lowering of their testosterone is called  “hypogonadism” Or “low -t”. It is a disease wherein the body unable to produce normal amount of testosterone. They also call it men menopause or “andropause.”

Chronic level such as alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver can lower testosterone production. Even scientific research say that low amount of testosterone can cause type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease and prostate cancer.

Testosterones regulate and add the sperm production of the body.

Aside from that, testosterone has also some functions.

Some of them are listed here:

  • Sex drive
  • Bone mass
  • Fat distribution
  • Muscle size and strength
  • Red blood cell production

The following symptoms – many of which are familiar as a part of aging – accompany low testosterone levels to make up the syndrome of late-onset hypogonadism.

This may reduce sexual desire and few spontaneous erections. It also includes infertility. It is also difficult to achieve orgasm during sex and even have issues about erectile dysfunction.

  • Changes in mood – Low in testosterone can increase irritability and sudden change of moods and decline in memory and concentration.
  • Reduced intellectual and cognitive powers – They cannot focus well and they have divided attention. They always feel tired and sleepy when they already has more time sleeping
  • Decrease in muscle mass/bone mass and strength – Most people develop more fat when they have low testosterone. Their muscle bump disappears and decrease bone density.
